Jeff Hantman received a BFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1995. He lived and worked in the Bay Area for 25 years, and recently relocated to Santa Fe, NM. He is intrigued by the challenge of working with plywood in an unconventional way, by creating curved structures and assemblages with this rigid material. He collects materials that are dumped illegally throughout Oakland, and is drawn to plywood, and wood covered in old paint and oil stains. His studio is packed with weathered objects, plywood scraps, 2×4’s, and broken furniture. He combines woodworking, painting, drawing, printmaking, and CAD to create curved structures that hang on the wall, or freestanding sculptures.
Hantman has been awarded residencies at Djerassi, Krems Austria, Recology, and was a KALA Fellowship Artist. He has exhibited work at the KALA Art Institute, The Compound Gallery, Napa Valley Museum, The de Saisset Museum, and NIAD.
