Michele Théberge was born in Brooklyn, New York and currently lives in Oakland, California. Her paintings, drawings and installations both abstract and figurative exude a quiet stillness rooted in her years of meditation practice. She was educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University before receiving a MFA from the California College of the Art in San Francisco.
Her works have been shown in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Museum of Kyoto, Japan, Sharjah Art Museum in the United Arab Emirates, the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art, the di Rosa Collection in Napa, California, Sakai City Museum, Sakai Japan, and Montblanc Gallery in Hong Kong. She has been in residence in California at the Morris Graves Foundation in Arcata, In Cahoots printmaking residency in Petaluma and at the Headlands Center for the Arts as an affiliate artist.
She uses a wide range of media — including drawing, painting, installation and interactive projects — to explore the connections between the material and immaterial worlds and to share the expansive calm experienced in meditation. Repetition is a thread that runs through the work, whether it’s the repeated action of voicing someone’s wish or the mantra-like painting of thousands of tiny arcs on a painting. This repetition in the creation of the work is a soothing meditative practice, imbuing the work with that mindfulness and presence.
